Ancestors to 1700

STOLLERY before 1600 a.d.

The STOLL+WERTHE marriage was reported in one reference read in 1962. That book has proven elusive and has not been rediscovered as of Jan. 1, 2002.

Researchers say the "current" or known foundations of our family were traced to THOMAS STALWORTHY who fathered three children from which came the STOLLERY family. Of Thomas we don't know much; born circa 1520 -- his birth record is as yet undiscovered -- we do know that he is credited with three children. In order to better track famillies, and so forth, we'll 'number' Thomas as G1-1.

ROBERT STOLLAR, G2-2, is born in 1546, Woodbridge St. Mary, Suffolk, the "home state" of the family, in England.
Robert fathered one child, Edward STALLERY; other information is as yet undiscovered.

THOMAS STOLLAR (G2-3) 1547, Woodbridge St. Mary. Thomas had either one or two wives; the mother of his children is Margett, and there is a passing reference to Margery...which could be Margett. Tom died "about" 10 July 1605 and apparently was buried in Debenham, also in Suffolk, England. His marriage to Margett was 1565, Ipswich, Suffolk; she had been born in 1548 and died 10 July 1613. Their known children include Michael (Miles) STOLLERY, Olive STOLLAR, Robert STOLLAR, Thomas STOLLAR and Abram STOLLAR.

RACHEL STOLLAR (G2-4) was born in 1549, in Woodbridge St. Mary; she has disappeared from our view.

Our long range plan is to "clean and clear" all information in the PAF file, which is our source, then provide a "Stollery Only" listing -- at http://stollery.8m.net -- while this set of pages becomes the STOLLWERTHE / STOLLWORTH family site.

In any case, we talk more about STALWORTH > STOLLER >>STALLERY/E >>> STOLLERY at the http://stollery.8m.net page.

G3 generation" is FIRST "Stollery Generation"

EDWARD STALLERY, G3-5, was fathered by G2-2, Robert Stollar. He married Margaret Shippe in Mendlesham, 20 May 1590, and buried her there 4 Dec. 1604; no children were recorded by Margaret, however his second wife Mirable Ellinger presented him with four G4s: Edward and John STALLERY and Robert STALLERYE, and a daughter Stallery. Edward died about 12 Aug. 1643.

MICHAEL MILES STOLLERY (G3-6) is the first named son of Thomas Stollar and Margett Hinds Stollar, the only records extant presents his wife as Ann, married 1615, and his his death 29 Aug. 1634. The family lived in Debenham, Suffolk, and their five known children are G4s: Thomas, John, Mary, Priscilla and Samuell STOLLERY.

One other 'third generation' succession is found: THOMAS STOLLAR, G3-9. His marriage to Rebecca Knyghtes is recorded in Bacton, church or state unknown (England) on 14 May 1601. She presented him with three children, in G-4: Edward, Thomas and John STOLLAR.

Name Spelling and Sounds

Why the different spellings of our last name?
*STALWORTHY came, of course, from our original "STOLL+WERTHE" which probably evolved into STOLLWERTHE, STOLLWARTHE, STOLLWORTHY.

FAS' report includes a remark that the "stollery" pronounciation is a dialectical rendering of 'stalworthy,' and spelling variances are more usual than not during the 16th century. Much was to change with the invention of "dictionaries."

Our vision today of spelling of the early 16th century is "by guess," as we have no true reference of the time. 'A' may have been interchangeble with 'O,' so the first-found of our line, Thomas STALWORTHY, may have had his name recorded (however out of our sight) STOLWORTHY. Dialect differences could have easily grown over the intervening 250 years. However, your editor expected TH to elide to a D, WORDY, akin to WARD(Y), unless TH is itself an elision from D. It's possible; "herder" "herther" "werthe" ...

Where did STALLER, STALLERYE, STOLLER, and such come from? In three days since this page was last edited, some additional thinking: All are in line with one child of STALWORTHY. Three children, R. STOLLAR, T. STOLLAR, (female) STOLLAR. R's children STALLERY, and grandchildren, versions of STALLERY(e). The fourth grandchild's own offspring are STOLLERY.
T. STOLLER's children were M. STOLLERY, and four STOLLARs; only the one STOLLERY's records remain.

We are left with several fronts for further research: STALLERY (Stalworthy > Stollery > Stallery), and STOLLER (Stalworthy > Stollar > Stollar). In addition, of course, to the area before Thomas Stalworthy < STALWORTH?

**the "G" Number explained

It's our contention that the first level where the name STOLLERY is spelled out in that fashion becomes the "First Generation." This occurs on the so-called "third line" of the FAS publication. Is this critical?

NO. In true fact, the very first generation of STOLLERYs was caused by marriage. We have no way (yet) of knowing in a concrete fashion the generations of STOLLWERTHE > STALWORTHY that led from 1253 to the 1540s, where our saga has arbitrarily said the "first generation" begins. Remember, our contention is that the FIRST generation of STOLLERY starts with the generation in which that name spelling appears.

So, to avoid saying "This is the first generation," your editor used G1. Thomas Stalworthy is G1-1. His children are G2-2, 3 and 4...and the G numbers agree with the "numbered" generations as listed in the FAS book. As for the second number, that agrees with the NAME numbers in the FAS book.

Is this critical? Perhaps. There are several mysteries within our family heritage, some caused by unclear records, missing records, records never kept...and some, by people who may have "run away."

Run away? Yes! We have several families who have contiued the family name, but whose progenitors are not known. They've shown up here and there, and -- so far -- elude our knowledge as to where they fit.

OH. If we find family before Thomas Stalworthy: what then? Guess we'll use -G1, -G2 etc. to keep them separate. That way, their pages just slip inside the FAS book.

As for our Orphans: when we get them connected and in place, they'll become 'alphabetical entry names' and "appended" in the appropriate places. (Example: If one fits G4-12, Edward STALLERY, as family, it becomes G5-12A, B, etc. and succeeding generations will keep the 12 number.)

G4 lists Nine -- All STOLLERYs

G4-14, Robert STALLERYE, son of Edward STALLERY and Robert STOLLAR, from Thomas, was born in 1618 and christened on 19 May of that year in Mendlesham, Suffolk. He married 19-yr. old Elizabeth COOK (1620-1667) and their home was in Mendlesham, where he died about the same time she did (1667). Two children are theirs: Robert (23) and George (24)STOLLERY.

G4-15, Thomas STOLLERY, son of Michael Miles and Ann; from Thomas STOLLAR and Thomas, was born in Debenham, Suffolk, and christened 13 Feb. 1617. His wife Susannah (1620-1668) was 24 when they were joined; their G5 children include Thomas (25), Michael (26), Susan (27), John (28), Mary (239), Daniel (30), Henry (31) and Elizabeth (32).

Other "G4" members, named in the G3 family listings, have not been revealed to your editor by the end of 2001.

G5: Most Productive Parent Yet

G5 records exist for one STOLLERY: MICHAEL MILES. (We will not speculate on Miles for his middle name except to note that Miles is reportedly a reference to the Roman soldiers.) No other STOLLERY records have been discovered!

Michael is worth a chapter to himself. He was virile, very popular, and highly prolific. Born in 1650 in Debenham, and moved to Stonham Aspal, Suffolk, where he lived his adult life. Which started, for him, at age 25 when he married 12 year old Sara (?) (1663 - ?).

With Sara, they had three STOLLERY children in Stonham Aspal; Thomas (33) in 1677, Sarah (34) christened 23 Dec 1679 and Susan (35) christened 7 Aug 1683.

Sara's passing isn't noted however Michael's second marriage is: Mary HAYWARD was his bride on 22 Jan 1684, in Earl Stoneham. She made her home with him in Sonham Aspal, mothered five children, and was buried 1 Jun 1692. Their G6ers are all STOLLERYs: (36) Mary, c. 3 Dec 1684; (37) John, c. 23 Sep 1686, died age 3, buried 21 Sep 1689; (38) Margaret, 1688-1732; (39) Elizabeth, c. 27 May 1690, buried 15 August of that year; and (40) Alice, who lived about 10 days from her christening date 11 June to burial 21 June, 1691.l (Mother mary lived another year and passed.)

Michel's brood was not long without a mother; Elizabeth KEEN was his third choice. Elizabeth, joined him, in Sonham Aspal, 28 July 1692 for seven years; her interment was 8 Dec. 1699, after providing four more STOLLERYs: (4 1) Henry, c. 6 Jun 1693; (42) John, c. 3 Oct 1694 and died the following spring, 13 Apr 1695; (43) Robert, c. 28 Jan 1696 and died age two, 20 Apr 1698. Robert outlived his younger brother (44) George, c. 10 Mar 1697; died 12 april 1698.

With Elizabeth laid to rest 8 Dec. 1699, Michael was not content to be the widowed bachelor of Stonham Aspal, in Suffolk, England. He took to wife Catherine DOWSING 13 Nov. 1700, and their unity was enlivened during their 25 yeaers of marriage by seven children. Catherine was interred 4 Oct. 1725, and Michael lived an additional six years (1731).

Michael's fourth family was: (45) Edward, 1702-1775; (46) Catherine, c. 28 Dec. 1703; (47) Elizabeth, c. 21 Aug. 1705; (48) John, c. 21 Aug 1705 and buried possibly 17 Apr 1737 (see below); (49) Dowson, c. 11 Nov. 1708, who maried Anee Adams; Anee was born in 1715 but we have no further record of Dowson's family. (50) Benjamin, c. 22 Jan. 1710 was followed by Amey (51), c. 11 September 1715.

JOHN, like MICHAEL / MILES, are common names; there are over the centuries many whose headstones are inadequate to the task of qualifying which parents are involved. (Once the parents are known, records can be checked....)

MAJOR SCANDEL: THE BASE BORN and other stories

G6 is somewhat numerous; all of our generational members lived in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk. (The first family migration was by this generation's offspring.) This is also the first generation of recorded scandel. We will take that story in stride.

G6-33 is Thomas STOLLERY, from Michael Miles/ Thomas/ Michael Miles/ Thomas STOLLAR/ Thomas STOLWORTHY. This Thomas was christened Oct. 30, 1677; married Jane WORTS in Coddenham on Aug. 24, 1702 (he was 35) and in Stonham Aspal, made their home and seven known children:
(52) Thomas, 1703-1748; (53) John, c. 18 May 1705, buried 17 Apr 1737; (54) Miles, c. 1 Oct. 1706, biried 3 Jan. 1791; (55) Robert, c. 27 Jul 1708 and buried 4 May 1710, before age two; (56) Watts, c. 4 Jun 1710; (575) Joseph, c. 22 July and buried seven days later, in 1711; and (58) Caniel, c. 27 Apr. 1714.

Scandal finally appeared on the Stollery scene. An exceedlingly rare event, in the 18th century, was to befall G6-38, Margaret STOLLERY. She had been born, and spent her life, in Stonham Aspal, from 1688 to 4 May 1732, when she passed at age 44. Her scandel was her 11-year old son (at the time of her death), Brice STOLLERY (59), born 28 April 1721 and noted in the Parish record as "son base born..."
What makes this so interesting is a collation of data; among them, even 'base born' children (= bastards) were allowed baptism or christening in the church. We are aware that christening can await the child's first birthday (and how often does that happen?) while baptism occurs "at birth." Note the record (so far) on Brice omits even baptismal information, AND it does not say stillborn or buried or anything. Guess? Wild guess? Margaret was the paramour of an older, noble gentleman who was not of Stonham Aspal; he took Brice at an early age, and if Brice shows up somewhere else in England, we've a better chance of discovering his father! Sidebar, check out Coats of Arms 2; could belong to Brice!! (the devices thereof, being from 'Dad's' shield?!)

G6-45 is Edward STOLLERY, c. 4 August 1702. He married twice, the first Hannah presenting him with six, while Sarah provided two. Edward was buried 17 Sep 1775, after spending his life at Stonham Aspoal.

Edward and Hannah parented: (60) Edward, born 12726; (61) Nathanael, c. 19 Dec. 1727; (62) Sarah, c. 14 Apr. 1729 (but she died before 1737); (63) Hannah, c. 17 Feb 1730. Hannah married locally born Robert THURMUDD, 14 Oct 1759. Also from Hannah came (64) Miles, 1734; (65), and Sarah, born 1737.

Edward so liked the SARAH name his second wife was Sarah, and together they had (66) William in 1743 and (87) Catherine in 1747 (who died that year).
