STOLLERYs after 1700

G7s Host the Second Scandal

67-52 is Thomas (of Thomas then Michael Miles then Thomas then Michael Miles STOLLERY, which is G3) was born in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk, 1703, and moved to Rushmere St. Andrew, near Ipswich, Suffolk, for his family's life. He maried Catherin WELHAM 27 November 1725 in Rushmere St. Andrew; she was about 20, and lived until 1748, age 67+. She and Thomas present us with ten offspring, all STOLLERY surnamed:
(68) Thomas Jr., c. 17 Jul 1726; (69) Daniel, c. 14 Jan 1728; (70) Catherine, c. 14 Dec. 1729; (71) Joseph, C. 25 Jun 1732; (72) Jane, born 1734; (we are guessing but she was either an early - January - baby, or a twin of) (73) John, born 1734 and c. 1 Aug. 1736; (74) Nicholas, 1736, c. 5 Mar. 1737; (75) Michael, 1738; (76) Worts (Watts) born 1740; (77) Ann, c. 22 Nov. 1741, and (78) Robert, buried 18 Mar. 1743; in December that year, Dec. 13, 78 Robert was christened (posthumously).

G7-60, Edward, born and christened (30 Dec) 1726 in Stonham Aspal, married Sara HARVEY of that city on 14 Oct. 1759; they had four children, (79)Edward (III),born 1763 and c. 1 Jan 1764; (80) Mary, c. 20 May 1766, buried 6 Jan 1768; (81) William (c. 31 Jul 1770) and (82) Dowson (c. 23 Oct. 1774).

G7-64 Miles STOLLERY (spelled "Mils" in the Parish latin record) was c. 2 Feb. 1734. It's rare for a wife not to be named, but it happens here; the bald record says 'he' had seven children: 83 Thomas, c. 15 Apr 1770-; 84 Miles, c 6 Mar 1772, buried 5 Mar 1779; 85 Hannah, c. 23 May 1774, and possibly the one buried 20 Sep 1776; 86 Edward, c. 26 Feb. 1776, married Prudence Nov. 6, 1816. G7-64 Miles also fathered 87 Sarah, c. 6 Jun 1779; 88 Esther, c. 6 May 1781, and 89 Elizabeth, c. 1 Jun 1783.

** SCANDAL AVOIDED!! Delete next entry (in file)

SARAH (G7-65) on FAS' book page 7 is actually the second wife of 45 Edward; you will want to delete the page sever references to the 65+90+91 entry. (Proof: 65 Sarah born 1737; 90 William born 1743? Sarah a mother at age six? with children's details identical to Edward's second wife Ann?)

G7-66 William, c. 11 Mar 1743, was to father a child Esther MOORE to Elizabeth MOORE but they did not marry. Esther was born and then christened 23rd May 1769; as 59 Brice, the birth was "base born." Unlike 59 Brice, Esther was christened. It was 29 October 1770 that William married Mary SMITH. Nothing more is recorded.

*****G8: Twelve members from three parents *****

G8 means, in this case, the grandchildren of Thomas / Thomas / Michael Miles / Thomas / Michael Miles STOLLERY, Thomas STOLLAR and Thomas STOLWORTHY. "Lady Jane" -- no. 72 -- presents us with a nice surpirse, and an interesting view of the mores of the time:

G8 - 72 is Jane,c. 11 aug. 1734, Rushmere St.Andrew, near Ipswich, Suffolk, England. This was her home, and the father of her first child is not known: STOLLERY 93 is Joseph, christened 31 Mar 1754, four years BEFORE Jane married George (DANDY or DARDREY) 28 April 1758. Why the confusion of his last name? "Paperwork." Her three children by George are last namned DANDY, so the speculation is that a Mr. Dardrey may be Mr. Dandy's precursor OR there was an error in one record not repeated in another. Jane and George's children are 94 George Jr., 1759; 95 James, 1761; 96 Nicholas, 1763.

G8-75 is Michael, Jane's brother; his christening, 5 Mar 1738, is Rushmere St. Andrew, near Ipswich; he married in Woodbridge St. Mary, Hannah SHERWOOD, 20 Oct. 1763. (Our ancestors seemed enamoured of the name Hannah; this may be said about certain other names, but especially Hannah!) Michael and Hannah parented 97 Joseph, born 1766, died 1828; 98 Michael, born 1768; and 99 John, born 1770.

G8-76 is Worts, or Watts, STOLLERY. Your author's ignorance of Suffolk is evident as initially it's presumed Worts is the "roamer" of the major STOLLERY element in Rushmere St. Andrew, Ipswich. Although born and christened, 7 Dec. 1749, in RSA, he moved and married Elizabeth PLANTING in Alderton, Suffolk (mariage in 1768). Their five and approximate birth dates: 100 Michael, 1769 (died 1851); 101 Hannah, 1771 (C 1778); 102 Daniel 1773 (c 1781), 104 Elizabeth, 1776 (c 1781).

G9 moves further afield

Members of this generation apparently got tired of the "old home town" and moved further afield.

G9-97 is Joseph, born 1766. Before passing on in 1828, he married Elizabeth WISKER Nov. 29, 1790, in Boyton, Suffolk. (Elizabeth, born about 1771, died after 1841 in Blaxhall, Suffolk. Nancy Crisp provides the information that the maiden name was WISKEN, and that Elizabeth was living with daughter Charlotte and husband John Hammond at the time of the 1841 census.)
Joseph and Elizabeth had 105, Hannah, in 1793; 106 Mary in 1796, in Capel St. Andrew Suffolk; 107 Joseph, 1799-1822; 108 John, 1801-1859; 109 Michael, 1802; 110 Richard, 7 April 1805 to 1859; 111 Charlotte, 12 Dec. 1806 (or 08?) died 8 Jul 1894; and 112, James, c. 20 May 1813 in Shottisham, Suffolk, dying shortly after.

G9-100 Michael was born 1769, and c. 20 Aug.1769 in Alderton, Suffolk; christened in Alderton, his place of buriel is Bawdsey, Suffolk, 1 May 1851. Michael married Anne COTTINGHAM (1768-1834) in Alderton, Suffolk, in 1792. He and Anne had 10 children: 113 Hannah, c 1789, Bawdsey; 114 Ann, c 1792, Alderton -- the only child born in that town; 115 Michael, c 21 Sep 1794; 116 Thamar, c. 26 Aug 1798; 117 Anne, c 5 Dec 1800 and 118, Henry (twin), c 27 Mar 1803; 119,Henry's twin Elizabeth; 120 Jemina, c. 17 Mar 1804; 121 David, 1808-1892; and 122 Daniel, 1810-1872.
Again, only one child was born in Alderton, the rest were born in Bawdsey. We surmise the family home in the later town, with Ann's birth in 1792 either early or at Anne Cottingham's mother's home.

G10 Really mixes things up!

G100-107 is Joseph, born 1799 in Shottisham, Suffolk, married Elizabeth DISBREY (or DISBORY) on May 22 1820.l She was born in 1797, and died Jan. 12 1873, and presumably lived her entire life in Boyton, Suffolk. All of their children (11 reported) are Boyton born, and all christened the same date: 25 June 1837. The actual birth years as given are 'estimates:'
123 William, 1821; 124 James, 1822; 125 Caroline, 1823; 126 John, 1824; 127 Joseph, 1826 (not listed in the Christening list: born dead?); 128 Samuel, 1826; 129 Elizabeth, 1827; 130 David, 1828; 131 Josiah, 1829; 132 Michael, 1830 (died 10 Feb. 1911); and 133, Benjamin, born 1834, not listed as christened, died 2 Nov. 1912.

108 John, born in Shottisham, Suffolk, was christened on Dec. 20 of 1801. He married Ann LYON Oct. 12, 1826, in Hollesley Parish Church, Suffolk. (Ann, born 1799, died, and buried in Shottisham Parish Church, Shottisham, April 1, 1875.) John was a farmer (listed, Census 1851). John and Ann aparently had no children.

**MYSTERY MICHAELS AND SARAHS ...

Michael is a common Stollery name, with G8-98 Michael born 1768, G8-100 Michael born Alderton 1769, G10-115 Michael born in Bawdsey, 1794 and G8-109 Michael born Shottisham 1802. Why bring this all up? Because 'Michael' married 'Sarah' in either 1820 or 1824; and "a Jane Stollery, daughter of Michael and Mary, baptised 5 Nov. 1815" ... and the marriage of M&M is missing. If we "inspect" the dates, we note that 115 Michael is of a better age to have sired a daughter to be baptised in 1815, named Jane (134). Records on 115 Michael are absent; was his wife Mary? Sarah? Regardless, Jane and Michael (and indeed the rest of this family) were born in Shottisham.

G10 -109 Michael is given credit in FAS' book for 134 Jane despite Michael's birth 1802. Jane christened, Nov 5, 1816, and brother 135 Michael, born 1819, are BOTH before 109 Michael's marriage to Sara in 1820; your editor hasn't seen the original records and cannot comment yes or no! [Editor's guess: 1343 Jane and 135 Michael are the children of 115 Michael, whose wife may have been Mary. They may have had a third child, George; see 137 George below.)

G10-109 Michael and Sarah had other children; 136 James, c. Jul. 20, 1826, died as an infant; 137 George born 1826, is probably not the George christened 27 May 1822 (who your editor believes belongs to the Michael-Mary "unlisted" marriage of the previous paragraph). Then there was 138 Daniel born 1828, 139 David, c. May 22, 1829; 140 David, born perhaps 1830 and c. 28 Feb. 1844, and 141 James, born 1832 and c. Jul. 29, 1844.

Would there be two Davids in the same family? We'd know more if middle names had been reported; without them, we can only guess. Given the large numbers of Michaels, we can imagine how simple it would be to confuse one here and there!

G100-110 Richard, also of Shottisham, born apr 7, 1805, married Matilda SMYTH Jun 7, 1824 in
Boyton, Suffolk. They made their home there, where four children were born; he died and was buried in Boyton, Suffolk, 1859. Children: 142 Joseph Richard born 1824, 143 Juliet c. Jun 3 1827, 144 Elizxabeth, 1830-1856, and 145 John born 1832. Matilda died or divorced and Richard maried Mary Anne SAWYER ASpr. 29, 1834 and they had 12 more children. 146 Joseph, perhaps born 1834 but certainly christened Apr 5, 1863; 147 James, b. 1835 and christened with 148 Alfred, May 28,1837; 149 Arthur, c 17 Mar 1839; 150 Ephraim, 1842-1890; 151 Martha, c. May 26, 1844; 152 Michael, c Oct. 5 1845, is believed to have emigrated to Australia. Also of this family is 153 Hannah, c. Oct. 5, 1845; 154 Amelia, c. Oct 25 1851; 156 Henry, born Mar 13, 1855, and 157 Joshua, 1858-1881.

G10-111 Charlotte, born in Shottisham either in Dec. 1806 or 1808, died July 8 1804 in Blaxhall and was buried in St. Peters of Blaxhall, Suffolk. Elizabeth Coulson Stollery said the birth year was 1800; a "baptised Sept. 30, 1808" means the 1806/8 confusion is in reading papers. (1800/06/08?) Charlotte married John Hammond Jr.

Omitted are numbers 158-163 inclusive; in the FAS book, these are HAMMOND family -- outside the purview of this page.

G10-121 David, born Sept. 15, christened Nov. 5, 1808, in Bawdsey, Suffolk; his burial location is in Ilford, near London. Me migrated to or near Ugborough and married Ann Jeffrey of that place, Aug. 22, 1842, and they later moved to Whitechapel, London. She'd been born May 15, 1814 and died Dec. 26, 1903 and is also buried in Ilford. Their children were two: 164 John, May 6, 1849 to Apr. 13, 1922; and 165 Ann, Nov. 5 1854 in Whitechapel, died Mar 13, either 1857 or (according to Mary Lord Morgan) 1897. (Yes, a '9' can be read as a '5.')

G10-122 Daniel, born in Bawdsey and christened there Sept. 23, 1810, married Mary Anne by 1843 (we presume). He later died in 1872; she is not well recorded. Their children are listed as 166 Ann, c. Oct. 13, 1844; 167 Hernry, c. 26 Nov. 1846; 168 Harry, c. 26 Nov. 1848, in Alderton. Children 169 Michael (1851 -) and 170 Rhoda (1855 -- ) were born in Bawdsey. Child 171 Harriet was born circa 1857.
